Greenwood, S.C. – Drivers in western South Carolina are waking up to flash flooding across roadways and low-lying areas after heavy overnight rain triggered urgent warnings in Greenwood, Abbeville, and McCormick counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg and Columbia, flash flood warnings remain in effect through 9:15 a.m. for eastern Abbeville and northwestern Greenwood counties, and until 8:30 a.m. for central McCormick County. Radar estimates show 2 to 3.5 inches of rain have fallen since 3 a.m., with an additional inch possible.

Localized flooding is impacting areas around Long Cane Creek, McCord Creek, and Keller Branch. Street flooding has also been reported in Abbeville, Ware Shoals, and Promised Land, while the McCormick County Airport and Hawe Creek Campground are experiencing rising water levels.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, especially near creeks, underpasses, and poor-drainage zones. The NWS advises turning around rather than risking submerged routes.

Rain is expected to ease by midmorning, but saturated ground conditions could prolong flooding risks. More alerts may follow if additional storms develop.
