Erie, PA – Residents across northwestern Pennsylvania are dealing with persistent lake-effect snow today as a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in place for Erie and Crawford counties through 1 PM Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland.

The warning comes as cold air continues to sweep across Lake Erie, producing steady snow showers and at times heavier bands capable of quickly covering roads. The NWS noted that visibility may drop sharply during stronger bursts, especially in communities closest to the shoreline, including Erie, North East, Girard, Meadville, and surrounding townships.

According to the NWS update issued Monday afternoon, travel impacts are expected to fluctuate throughout the day and night as bands shift south and east. The agency said motorists should expect rapidly changing conditions, with slick roads, blowing snow, and occasional whiteouts possible along major routes such as I-90, I-79, and US-19.

Forecasters said the lake-effect activity will taper off late Tuesday as winds shift and moisture decreases, but scattered snow showers may still linger into the evening. Temperatures are expected to remain in the lower 30s, allowing any untreated surfaces to freeze overnight.

The National Weather Service also issued a Winter Weather Advisory for counties south of the warning area, with lighter but still impactful snow expected. Motorists traveling between Erie and northeastern Ohio may experience additional delays due to shifting band placement.

Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time and monitor updated forecasts as lake-effect systems can intensify quickly.
