PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A gray sky hangs low over the rivers this Wednesday morning, carrying the smell of wet leaves and cool air. Raindrops will be few but persistent as Pittsburgh slides into a breezy stretch of true fall weather before clearer, colder air arrives by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Moon Township, scattered light showers will move through western Pennsylvania today, with gusty southwest winds near 20 mph. Temperatures will top out near 52 degrees, then dip into the mid-40s by Wednesday evening. Thursday brings another chance of passing showers, mainly during the afternoon, followed by cooler, drier air streaming in from the northwest.

By Friday, skies will clear and highs will reach the mid-50s — brisk but bright, ideal for outdoor errands or early Halloween decorating. The air turns sharper by Friday night as lows fall into the mid-30s. Rural valleys from Butler to Washington counties could see patchy frost before sunrise Saturday, a sign that fall’s chill is tightening its grip.

Motorists on I-79 and I-376 can expect occasional slick patches from leaf litter and damp pavement through Thursday, but no major travel impacts are expected. Residents should secure outdoor plants and prep for the first truly crisp mornings of the season.

To be fair, it’s classic late October in western Pennsylvania: chilly mornings, smoky sunsets, and a steady reminder that winter’s not far off.
