Pittsburgh, PA – Drivers across western Pennsylvania are facing hazardous travel conditions tonight as dense fog spreads across the region, especially in northern counties. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh reports that some locations are seeing visibility drop below a quarter mile.
According to the National Weather Service, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for several northern counties, including Clarion, Butler, Armstrong, and Indiana. The advisory was issued late Sunday, September 23, and continues through the early morning hours of Monday, September 24.
The latest visibility map shows sharp reductions across the northern tier, with some areas reporting less than 0.25 miles of visibility. The fog is patchy in southern areas, but drivers around Pittsburgh and along major routes such as I-79, I-80, and I-76 are urged to use caution.
Officials remind motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra distance between vehicles when driving in dense fog. Travel delays are possible overnight into the Monday morning commute, particularly in rural areas and valleys where fog tends to linger longer.
The advisory is expected to expire by 9 a.m. Monday, when conditions are forecast to improve as daytime heating disperses the fog.
