PITTSBURGH, PA – Flakes are falling again across western Pennsylvania, and Thursday’s morning commute could turn slick fast as light snow spreads through the region. Meteorologists say most areas will see a coating to 2 inches, but with temperatures near freezing, even minor accumulation could cause trouble on local roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, snow began late Wednesday night ahead of an approaching cold front and will continue into mid-morning Thursday. The heaviest bands are expected north and east of the city, with ridges and higher elevations of Westmoreland and Indiana Counties likely seeing the most accumulation. Travel along I-79, I-376, and Route 22 may be impacted during the morning rush as snow sticks to untreated surfaces.
While totals remain modest, the cold ground temperatures mean snow will cling to bridges, ramps, and shaded areas, creating patchy black ice conditions. Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra space, and allow additional time to reach destinations safely.
Winds will stay light, but a noticeable chill will settle in as highs struggle to reach the low 30s Thursday. Skies clear slightly Friday with highs in the mid-30s, before another round of light snow could clip the area late Friday night.
Looking ahead, temperatures will stay cold through the weekend, with daytime highs in the 30s and overnight lows dipping into the teens. NOAA’s long-range outlook through December 11–17 shows continued below-normal temperatures and an active snow pattern stretching from the Great Lakes through the Appalachians, suggesting more winter weather is on the way.
