Western Pennsylvania Travel Alert: Heavy Snow Starts 7PM Sunday, Hazardous Through Tuesday

Pittsburgh, PA – Drivers across western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia should prepare for rapidly deteriorating travel conditions beginning 7 p.m. Sunday, as a strong winter storm moves through the region bringing up to 6 inches of snow and gusty winds through Tuesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for Mercer, Venango, and Forest counties in Pennsylvania, along with Preston and Tucker counties in northern West Virginia. These areas are forecast to see 3 to 6 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph, creating blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions at times.

Additional advisories begin 1 p.m. Monday for higher elevations in Westmoreland and Fayette counties, including Donegal, Ligonier, Ohiopyle, and Champion, where 1 to 3 inches of snow and icy roads will impact travel through Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Forecasters warn that Monday’s morning and evening commutes could be extremely hazardous, with snow-covered and icy roads expected across much of the region. Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, slow down, and allow extra stopping distance during the storm.
