Pittsburgh, Pa. –Storms across western Pennsylvania could bring damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall through Sunday evening, with the strongest storms developing this afternoon into early tonight. The National Weather Service warns that a few of these storms may reach severe levels, capable of producing localized flooding in urban and low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., with a 70% chance of rain. Some storms could bring rainfall rates high enough to briefly flood streets and underpasses. Winds may gust strong enough to cause isolated power outages and down tree limbs.
By Monday, conditions should turn calmer with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s. However, another round of storms is likely Monday night into Tuesday, raising the threat of localized flash flooding once again. Commuters should plan for delays on I-376, I-79, and other major roadways if heavy downpours develop during peak travel times.
Emergency officials recommend avoiding travel during severe storms, charging devices in case of outages, and not attempting to drive through flooded roads.
Additional showers may linger into midweek before drier, sunnier weather returns late in the week.
