Pittsburgh, PA – Residents across western Pennsylvania and parts of northern West Virginia are waking up to a Freeze Warning in effect until 9 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
The advisory, issued at 1:08 a.m. EDT Friday, October 17, 2025, covers Venango, Forest, Butler, Clarion, Jefferson, Armstrong, Indiana, Westmoreland, and Fayette Counties, along with parts of Preston and Tucker Counties in West Virginia.
According to forecasters, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30°F are expected through the early morning hours. The cold snap may kill sensitive vegetation and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, prompting officials to urge residents to take precautions immediately.
The Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. EDT, after which temperatures are expected to gradually warm. However, agricultural experts caution that a single hard freeze can end the growing season for many late crops.
Gardeners and homeowners are encouraged to cover or bring in plants, disconnect garden hoses, and insulate exposed pipes to prevent overnight damage.
