Portland, OR – The National Weather Service in Portland is warning residents to prepare for periods of heavy rainfall this week, which could cause localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions, especially during the Monday evening commute.

Forecasters say river flooding and urban roadway flooding are possible as rounds of rain move across northwestern Oregon and southwest Washington. Some areas not typically affected by high water may also experience flooding due to intense rainfall rates and saturated ground.

The NWS emphasizes that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles and are preventable. Drivers are strongly advised not to drive through flooded roadways and to seek alternate routes. Even shallow water can conceal washed-out pavement or strong currents.
