Amarillo, Texas – Triple-digit temperatures are scorching the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles this week, with Amarillo and surrounding communities facing a prolonged and dangerous stretch of heat through Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the region, warning of highs near 105°F Wednesday afternoon and continuing hazardous heat through at least the end of the work week.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday for much of the Panhandle, including Dalhart, Borger, Dumas, Hereford, and Guymon. Southwest winds and persistent sun will keep heat indices well above 100°F, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed for long periods. City roads, parking lots, and unshaded parks will quickly heat to dangerous levels.

Outdoor workers, older adults, and those without air conditioning are at greatest risk. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activities to early mornings or evenings, drink extra fluids, and check on neighbors and pets. Local agencies advise using cooling centers and seeking shade whenever possible. Emergency officials warn heat stroke can develop rapidly; move anyone showing symptoms to a cool place and call 911.

Scattered rain and thunderstorms may develop by Saturday, offering some relief to the region by late weekend or early next week. Until then, expect hot, mostly sunny days and warm nights across the Amarillo area and nearby towns. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the heat continues.
