Buffalo, NY – Residents across Western New York should prepare for unsettled weather today and Tuesday, with the National Weather Service warning of a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service Buffalo office, storms are most likely between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2025, with the greatest risk focused on areas near Buffalo, Rochester, and Niagara Falls. Hazards include wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and frequent lightning, which could cause power outages and dangerous travel conditions.
Forecast models show precipitation chances increasing steadily through Monday afternoon, peaking at 70–80 percent in many cities including Dunkirk, Springville, and Olean, before continuing into Tuesday. The threat will ease gradually by early Wednesday morning.
Meteorologists emphasize that strong, isolated storms could develop quickly. “A few rounds of showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected, with strong gusty winds the primary severe weather threat,” the NWS stated in a social media update.
Drivers and residents are urged to monitor weather alerts and secure outdoor items that could be blown around by strong winds. Those in the path of storms should also be prepared for brief disruptions to travel and potential localized damage.
