Wichita Falls, TX– Powerful winds and extremely dry air are creating a volatile fire environment across western North Texas Friday afternoon, where even a small spark could quickly grow into a fast-moving grass fire before conditions ease tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Friday for several counties along the Oklahoma border, including Wichita, Wilbarger, Archer, Baylor, Clay, Hardeman, Knox and Foard. Northeasterly winds are expected to blow 20 to 30 mph, rapidly drying vegetation as humidity drops as low as 15 to 20 percent.
Communities including Wichita Falls, Vernon, Archer City, Seymour and Henrietta face the highest fire danger during the afternoon hours when winds peak and fuels remain extremely dry. Officials warn that fires could spread quickly across open grassland and rural roadways.
Drivers along U.S. Highway 287, U.S. 82 and State Highway 25 should remain alert for smoke or sudden visibility reductions if fires ignite nearby.
Local emergency managers strongly discourage outdoor burning, welding, or any activity that could create sparks during the warning period. Parking vehicles on dry grass or dragging trailer chains could also ignite fires under these conditions.
Winds are expected to weaken after sunset, gradually lowering fire danger overnight. However, dry vegetation remains in place across North Texas, meaning additional fire weather alerts could return if windy conditions redevelop this weekend.
