Buffalo, New York – Strong and potentially damaging winds are expected across much of western and north-central New York on Friday, Jan. 9, as Wind Advisories remain in effect through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. EST Friday, Jan. 9, for Jefferson and Lewis counties, including Watertown and Lowville. South to southeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected through the morning, particularly along the northwest face of the Tug Hill Plateau. Winds will shift to the southwest during the afternoon, with gusts near 50 mph continuing into the evening.

Additional Wind Advisories are in effect from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST Friday, Jan. 9, for portions of western and central New York, including Wayne, northern Cayuga, Oswego, Livingston, Ontario, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties. In these areas, south winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected, with the strongest gusts likely during the morning hours across the Finger Lakes, followed by widespread strong southwest winds during the afternoon and evening.

Cities impacted by the advisory include Oswego, Newark, Fair Haven, Geneseo, Canandaigua, Olean, Wellsville, and surrounding communities.

The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds may blow around unsecured outdoor objects, down tree limbs, and result in isolated power outages. Travel may be difficult at times, especially for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and use extra caution while driving, particularly during the Friday morning and evening periods, Jan. 9, when wind gusts are expected to peak.
