Asheville, NC – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of western North Carolina’s mountain region from 7 PM Thursday through late Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.
Forecasters warn that a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected across elevations above 3,500 feet, including portions of Madison, Haywood, Jackson, Transylvania, Buncombe, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, and Caldwell Counties.
Total accumulations are forecast to reach around one inch of snow and up to two-tenths of an inch of ice, enough to make roads slick and potentially impassable overnight. The Friday morning commute may be impacted, especially along mountain passes such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, U.S. 19E, and I-26 near the Tennessee line.
The NWS cautions that ice accumulation on trees and power lines could result in isolated power outages, particularly in higher elevations like Cashiers, Banner Elk, and Burnsville.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution if travel cannot be avoided. Residents can check 511 for the latest road conditions and follow @NWSGSP for real-time updates.
Conditions are expected to improve gradually by Friday afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing.
