New York — Light snow swirls across western New York this morning, softening rooftops and coating pavement as wind rattles street signs. Visibility dips at times, and plows are already active across the Buffalo metro.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from midday today through early Thursday. Snowfall totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected across western New York, with gusts up to 35 mph creating blowing and drifting snow. The most difficult travel is expected late today into early Thursday.
Snow showers increase through the day, especially south of Buffalo toward the Southern Tier. Roads become snow-covered quickly during heavier bursts. Drivers along I-90, Route 33, and Route 219 should plan for reduced visibility and slick lanes during the evening commute.
Temperatures remain cold, hovering near the low 30s this afternoon before dropping into the 20s tonight. Any melting during daylight hours refreezes fast after sunset, raising the risk of icy patches on bridges and ramps. Slow down and allow extra braking distance.
Thursday stays wintry. Snow showers linger, with another 1 to 2 inches possible before tapering later in the day. Winds remain brisk, keeping wind chills in the teens. Conditions improve briefly Thursday night, but cold air tightens its grip.
By Friday into the weekend, Arctic air returns. Highs struggle in the teens, with nighttime lows near zero. Even light snow showers could cause travel issues as salt becomes less effective in extreme cold.
Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook keeps western New York below normal in temperature, with periodic snow chances continuing as the pattern stays active.
