Buffalo, New York – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for western New York as accumulating snow and gusty winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the advisory is in effect from noon Wednesday until 7 a.m. EST Thursday, covering Niagara, Orleans, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties, including Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Batavia, Jamestown, Olean, Orchard Park, and surrounding communities.
Forecasters say snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected across the region. In addition, wind gusts up to 35 mph may lead to blowing and drifting snow, particularly in open and rural areas, reducing visibility at times.
Road conditions are expected to become slippery, with snow-covered roads developing during periods of steadier snowfall. The National Weather Service warns that hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening commute and the Thursday morning commute, especially during peak travel hours.
Drivers may encounter rapidly changing conditions as snowfall intensity fluctuates, with brief whiteout conditions possible in heavier snow bands. Bridges and overpasses may become slick earlier than other road surfaces.
Residents are urged to slow down and use caution while driving, allow extra travel time, and maintain safe following distances. Those traveling overnight or early Thursday morning should be prepared for reduced visibility and untreated roadways.
The National Weather Service encourages the public to continue monitoring forecast updates and to submit snowfall reports through official weather service channels.
