Buffalo, New York – Strong winds and prolonged lake effect snow are expected to impact western and north central New York beginning Monday, creating hazardous travel conditions and the potential for power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a High Wind Watch is in effect from late Sunday night through late Monday night for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, and Chautauqua counties. Wind gusts are expected to exceed 50 mph, with localized gusts up to 65 mph northeast of Lake Erie.

Forecasters say the combination of strong winds and saturated ground from recent rainfall may increase the risk of downed trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages. Winds are expected to gradually weaken Tuesday, though gusts up to 40 mph may persist.

In addition to high winds, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for lake effect snow east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Snow is expected to develop Monday afternoon, continuing through at least Wednesday morning, with some lake bands potentially lingering into late week.

The most persistent lake effect snow bands could produce over 7 inches of accumulation, with blowing and drifting snow creating whiteout conditions at times, particularly in open and rural areas. Gusty winds may significantly reduce visibility during heavier snow bands.

Commuters, students, and overnight workers should plan for rapidly changing road conditions, especially late Monday through Tuesday.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, prepare for possible power interruptions, and monitor official updates as warnings may be upgraded.
