Buffalo, N.Y. – Rain showers are bringing a cool-down across western and north-central New York today, with lakeside communities feeling the chill. Temperatures east of Lake Ontario are holding in the 60s, while inland areas across western New York reach the low to mid-70s.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, light to moderate rain is expected to continue throughout the afternoon, adding up to a quarter inch in some locations. Areas east of Lake Ontario, including Oswego and Jefferson counties, will stay notably cooler under steady cloud cover.

A Beach Hazards Statement is also in effect for Niagara and Orleans counties beginning at 2 p.m. today and lasting through 5 p.m. Thursday. The NWS warns of strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions along Lake Ontario’s south shore. Officials urge beachgoers to stay out of the water until conditions improve.

Waves on Lake Ontario are forecast to reach 3 to 5 feet at times, especially from Hamlin Beach to Sodus Bay, creating hazardous conditions for small craft and swimmers.

Unsettled weather is likely to linger through midweek, with additional showers possible before conditions gradually improve heading into the weekend.
