Buffalo drivers should prepare for slick commutes and possible travel slowdowns Thursday as heavy showers and thunderstorms push into western New York. Winds may gust up to 32 mph by Friday, creating hazards along I-90 and other major routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, showers begin after 8 a.m. Thursday, with periods of thunderstorms dropping up to an inch of rain. Localized flooding could affect low-lying neighborhoods and secondary roadways. Crews urge drivers to allow extra travel time and avoid areas prone to standing water.

Wednesday stays calm, with sunny skies and highs near 78. Conditions deteriorate late Wednesday night as clouds move in with scattered showers. Thursday’s system will dominate much of the day before tapering overnight.

Friday brings clearing skies but gusty southwest winds. Outdoor events, including football games, may feel more like fall with highs near 70 and breezy conditions across Erie and Niagara counties.

Saturday and Sunday will offer a drier stretch with partly sunny skies, highs in the 80s Saturday, before dipping back into the 60s by Monday. Cooler nights in the 50s signal a true fall pattern settling in for western New York.

Residents should keep devices charged and secure loose outdoor items ahead of Thursday’s wind and rain. Further advisories could be issued if rainfall totals increase.
