JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Powerful lake-effect snow bands off Lake Erie are blanketing Chautauqua County early Monday, bringing bursts of whiteout snow and hazardous travel that will last through Tuesday morning. The most persistent snow bands across the Chautauqua Ridge could deliver 8 to 11 inches of additional accumulation, while other areas pick up 4 to 8 inches.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST Tuesday. The most intense snowfall is expected late Monday night through early Tuesday morning, coinciding with the morning commute. Strong winds within the snow bands will cause rapid drops in visibility and snow-covered roads, especially along Interstate 86, Route 60, and local ridge-top communities.

Forecasters caution that travel will be difficult to dangerous within the heaviest snow bands, which may shift position with subtle wind changes. Motorists are urged to delay travel if possible and to carry emergency supplies. The Chautauqua Ridge, Mayville, and Jamestown are likely to experience the highest totals before the snow gradually tapers Tuesday afternoon.

Snowfall intensity and visibility will vary sharply across short distances, a hallmark of lake-effect storms in this region. Conditions will improve Tuesday afternoon as winds weaken and bands drift north.
