BUFFALO, N.Y. – Strong autumn winds are roaring across western and north-central New York this evening, prompting a Wind Advisory for much of the region as gusts reach up to 50 mph. The National Weather Service in Buffalo warns that the strongest winds will continue through tonight before easing late.
According to the NWS Buffalo office, widespread gusts of 45 to 50 mph are expected from the Niagara Frontier through Rochester and into Oswego and Jefferson counties. These winds could down tree limbs, cause scattered power outages, and make driving difficult—especially for high-profile vehicles along I-90, I-390, and the Lake Ontario shoreline routes.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, avoid parking under trees, and prepare for potential power interruptions. Safety officials recommend keeping flashlights, extra batteries, and blankets on hand and never using generators indoors or in garages due to carbon monoxide hazards.
The combination of falling leaves and gusty winds may also lead to clogged storm drains and brief roadway flooding in urban areas. Winds will gradually diminish overnight as the storm system moves east, with calmer and cooler weather settling in for Thursday.
