Buffalo, New York – Travel remains difficult to nearly impossible in parts of northern Oswego County today as heavy lake effect snow continues east of Lake Ontario, even while snow showers gradually weaken across much of Western New York.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, lake effect snow off both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario is expected to trend weaker through the day. However, a persistent and intense snow band east of Lake Ontario will remain capable of producing significant snowfall, particularly during the morning hours. Snowfall rates in northern Oswego County could reach 2 to 3 inches per hour early, before easing to 1 to 2 inches per hour later today.

Road conditions across Oswego County are expected to remain hazardous, with whiteout conditions possible at times under the heavier bands. Local and state road crews may struggle to keep up, especially on secondary roads. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid unnecessary travel in the hardest-hit areas.

Farther west, lighter lake effect snow will occasionally impact areas from northern Cayuga County westward through Rochester and into Niagara County. Additional accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible in these locations, while areas off Lake Erie, including the western Southern Tier, should see only spotty flurries with minimal accumulation.

Snow bands are expected to weaken and drift southward later today before gradually tapering off this evening. Lake effect snow warnings and advisories remain in effect, and additional updates are expected as conditions evolve.
