Buffalo, New York – Freezing rain will begin coating roads and power lines across western New York by 5 a.m. Wednesday, with up to a half inch of ice possible before conditions improve after 1 a.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. EST Thursday for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga and Genesee counties. Ice accumulations between a quarter and one half inch are possible, while snow and sleet totals should remain at one inch or less.
The greatest icing risk includes Rochester, Niagara Falls, Medina and Batavia, where freezing rain could weigh down tree limbs and power lines. Scattered power outages are possible if ice approaches one half inch. Untreated roads, sidewalks and parking lots may become extremely slick, especially during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.
Farther east toward Newark, Fair Haven and northern Cayuga County, precipitation may mix with more snow and sleet, slightly limiting ice buildup but still creating hazardous travel.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and prepare for potential delays. Residents should charge devices and be ready for isolated outages. Icing may continue in waves through Wednesday night before tapering after 1 a.m. Thursday.
