New York – Damaging southwest winds are expected to impact much of western and north-central New York beginning early Monday, prompting High Wind Warnings across multiple counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a High Wind Warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Monday to 1 a.m. EST Tuesday for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, and Chautauqua counties, including Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Jamestown, Batavia, and Orchard Park.
In these areas, southwest winds of 35 to 45 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph. Forecasters warn that saturated ground conditions will make shallow-rooted trees more susceptible to falling, increasing the risk of downed power lines and widespread power outages.
A separate High Wind Warning is in effect for Jefferson County, including Watertown, from 7 a.m. Monday to 1 a.m. EST Tuesday. Winds there are forecast to range from 30 to 50 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, posing similar risks to trees, power lines, and travel safety.
The National Weather Service cautions that travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, and falling debris may create additional hazards on roadways. Strongest winds are expected during the day Monday and Monday evening.
Residents are advised to avoid forested areas, secure loose outdoor objects, and remain indoors during peak wind periods if possible. Motorists should use caution and remain alert for sudden gusts and debris.
