Buffalo, NY – A biting chill is descending across Western New York this Sunday morning as the region braces for its coldest air of the season so far. Under clear skies and light winds, temperatures will plummet sharply tonight, setting the stage for a widespread Freeze Warning from 11 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, lows are expected to dip into the upper 20s and near 30°F, with slightly milder readings along the immediate Lake Ontario shoreline. The cold air mass will end the growing season across much of Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, and Genesee counties. Sensitive plants and late crops will be at risk, and residents are urged to cover vegetation and protect outdoor plumbing or sprinkler systems from freezing.
Despite the frosty start, Monday will turn bright and calm, with highs near 50°F under mostly sunny skies. The tranquil pattern continues through midweek, featuring cool mornings and mild afternoons — ideal for fall yard work or outdoor decorating before Halloween.
By Thursday, clouds will increase ahead of a developing system, bringing a chance of showers late Thursday into Friday. Trick-or-treaters can expect a mild, possibly damp Halloween evening with temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s.
