Buffalo, N.Y. – Dense fog is reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile across parts of western and southern New York early Friday, making morning commutes hazardous. Drivers in Jamestown, Olean, Wellsville, Elmira, and Binghamton could encounter sudden drops in visibility through 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo and Binghamton, Dense Fog Advisories remain in effect for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Tioga, and Broome counties in New York, along with Bradford, Susquehanna, and northern Wayne counties in Pennsylvania.

The thick fog is especially dangerous on rural highways, valleys, and bridges, where motorists may suddenly encounter near-whiteout conditions. Travel along I-86, I-390, and Route 17 is expected to be slow, and emergency officials urge drivers to keep headlights on low beam, reduce speed, and leave extra distance between vehicles.

The fog is expected to gradually lift by mid-morning as temperatures rise. No additional advisories have been issued for later today, though morning drivers should remain cautious until conditions improve.
