Buffalo, NY – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Wind Advisory for much of western New York on Sunday, warning of gusts up to 50 mph that could cause scattered power outages and hazardous travel conditions.
The advisory covers Niagara, Erie, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, and Chautauqua Counties, including major cities such as Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Batavia, and Jamestown. The strongest winds are expected from early Sunday morning through late evening, with southwest winds sustained at 25 to 35 mph and gusts occasionally higher along the Lake Erie shoreline and higher terrain.
Forecasters note that downslope winds in Chautauqua County may intensify overnight before shifting southwest Sunday morning. These strong winds could bring down tree limbs, damage outdoor objects, and cause isolated power outages.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles are urged to use caution, particularly on open highways and elevated routes where gusts could be strongest. Residents should also secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and trash bins before winds pick up.
The advisory remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday for Chautauqua County and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the Buffalo and Niagara regions.
