New York – Snowflakes return to the Buffalo region today as the Great Lakes winter machine spins up again. The air feels sharp and heavy at 28°F, with overcast skies hinting at what’s coming — a light snow that could quickly coat roads and rooftops before midday.
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service Buffalo expect snow to increase late this morning and continue through early Sunday, bringing 1 to 2 inches of accumulation for most of Erie County. Lake-enhanced bands could briefly boost totals near the southern suburbs and along I-90, where roads will likely turn slick under heavier bursts.
Winds out of the southwest will strengthen to 10–15 mph, gusting near 25 mph, which could lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility across open stretches. Temperatures stay steady in the upper 20s to low 30s, meaning any melted snow may refreeze into thin ice patches by evening. Drivers are urged to use caution on bridges and untreated surfaces, where black ice can form quickly.
By Sunday afternoon, snow tapers off with some late clearing and highs near 32°F. Monday offers a brief lull — sunny but cold, highs in the 20s — before another round of snow and rain returns Tuesday night, marking a wet and wintry pattern across western New York.
Long-range models show frequent clippers and lake-effect bursts likely Dec. 11–17, hinting that this early December snow streak could stretch well into holiday travel season.
