Rochester, New York – Lake-effect snow continues to create hazardous travel conditions across parts of western and north-central New York, with periods of heavy snowfall expected to persist into Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for communities along and east of Lake Ontario, including Monroe, Wayne, Orleans, northern Cayuga, and Oswego counties. Additional snowfall totals of 5 to 10 inches are possible in the most persistent lake-effect bands across Monroe and Wayne counties, while northern Cayuga and Oswego counties could see another 4 to 8 inches, especially near the shoreline.

Snowfall will fall in narrow but intense bands, leading to rapidly changing conditions over short distances. Areas such as Rochester, Newark, Fair Haven, and Oswego may experience bursts of heavy, fluffy snow that quickly cover roads and reduce visibility. The Friday morning and evening commutes are expected to be impacted, with untreated roads becoming slick and snow covered.

Forecasters note that snowfall rates may fluctuate, with periods of lighter snow followed by sudden heavier bursts as lake bands shift. Drivers may encounter near-whiteout conditions in one area and dry pavement just a few miles away.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for sudden drops in visibility. The advisory remains in effect through Saturday morning, and lingering lake snow may continue to cause localized travel issues even after it expires.
