BUFFALO, N.Y. – Western New York will see a major shift from calm skies to stormy weather as showers and thunderstorms move into the Buffalo area Tuesday morning. After a warm and sunny start to the week, residents should prepare for a quick cool-down and periods of heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, showers will develop late Monday night and intensify by early Tuesday, with thunderstorms possible after 7 a.m. Southwest winds will increase to 11 to 13 mph, with gusts up to 24 mph. Rainfall totals between one and two inches are possible, raising minor flooding concerns in low-lying areas and near Lake Erie shorelines.

Drivers should allow extra time for the morning commute as ponding on roads and brief visibility drops are likely during heavier downpours. Temperatures will fall sharply Tuesday night into the upper 40s as cooler, drier air moves in behind the system.

Skies will clear by Wednesday, bringing sunshine and highs in the upper 50s before warming again into the weekend. Additional weather alerts could be issued if storms intensify overnight.
