Buffalo, N.Y. – A fast-moving line of strong thunderstorms is hammering parts of western New York early Friday, bringing lightning, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts to the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the storms are expected to pass through Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Hamburg, and Jamestown between 5 and 6 a.m. Storm intensity will begin to weaken as the system moves inland, but threats will linger across the region through 8 a.m.

Frequent lightning and torrential rain are already impacting visibility and causing ponding on roadways—especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Wind gusts may bring down small branches or temporarily knock out power in isolated spots.

Drivers should avoid high-speed travel and use extra caution, particularly on I-90 and local roads around Erie, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties. If thunder roars, head indoors—lightning can strike even outside the heaviest rainfall.

Storms will taper off later this morning, but additional updates may be issued if activity redevelops or conditions worsen. Keep an eye on local alerts and be prepared for changing road and travel conditions through the morning hours.
