Buffalo, New York – Periods of steady rain could trigger localized flooding across western New York beginning Sunday afternoon, with the greatest concern centered on Buffalo-area creeks and urban drainage systems.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Flood Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon for Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, and both northern and southern Erie counties. Rainfall totals of 1 to 1.5 inches are expected across the region, with pockets of heavier rain possible where bands stall.

Statewide, the rain will fall on saturated ground, increasing runoff into rivers, creeks, and streams. Emergency managers say the most flood-prone locations will be smaller waterways that respond quickly to heavy rain, especially across the Buffalo metro.

In Erie County, creeks near Orchard Park, Springville, and areas south of the city may rise quickly late Sunday into early Monday. Urban flooding is also possible in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Jamestown, and Olean, where clogged drains and low-lying streets can collect water rapidly. Motorists should watch for water-covered roads, especially overnight and during the Monday morning commute.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to clear storm drains, avoid driving through standing water, and closely monitor weather alerts. Additional advisories or Flood Warnings may be issued if rainfall intensifies or creeks rise faster than expected through Monday afternoon.
