Buffalo, N.Y. – Rough waters are making boating dangerous across Lake Erie and Lake Ontario early Friday as a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, northwest winds between 10 and 20 knots are driving waves up to 6 feet on Lake Erie, stretching from Ripley through Buffalo Harbor. Conditions are slightly calmer on Lake Ontario, where waves range 3 to 5 feet from the Niagara River to Sodus Bay and into Mexico Bay near the St. Lawrence River.

The advisory warns that smaller vessels are at greatest risk, as choppy waters could lead to capsizing or damage. Inexperienced mariners are urged to stay off the water until the advisory expires. Those already on the lakes should wear life jackets, secure gear, and use caution near harbor entrances where waves may be most dangerous.

Hazardous boating conditions are expected to subside after sunrise Friday as winds gradually ease. No additional marine advisories have been issued for the weekend, but boaters are encouraged to check updated forecasts before heading out.
