Hastings, Nebraska – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across far western portions of south-central Nebraska this afternoon as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Hastings.

The warning covers Dawson, Furnas, Gosper, Phillips, and Rooks counties. Forecasters said relative humidity levels between 15 and 20 percent, combined with westerly winds gusting 20 to 30 mph, will create an elevated risk for fast-spreading fires.

According to the National Weather Service, any fires that start under these conditions could spread rapidly and become difficult to control, particularly in open grassland and agricultural areas where fuels are dry.

Officials urged residents to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including outdoor burning, welding, or operating equipment that produces sparks. Even small ignition sources could quickly lead to dangerous fire behavior.

Red Flag Warnings are issued when a combination of weather and fuel conditions support extreme fire growth potential. Conditions are expected to improve later this evening as winds decrease and humidity recovers.

The alert may be especially relevant for farmers, ranchers, and outdoor workers across western Nebraska who are working in exposed areas.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from weather.gov/gid and follow guidance from local emergency officials.
