North Platte, NE – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across western and north central Nebraska by late Saturday morning as extreme heat and dry air collide with strong winds.

According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday through 4 a.m. Sunday for areas including the Sandhills, Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, Niobrara Valley, and the Loup Rivers Basin. Relative humidity will drop as low as 6 percent while temperatures surge to 97°F. Westerly winds will sustain 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 35 mph through the afternoon.

Conditions will worsen after sunset. A sharp cold front will push south across northern Nebraska late Saturday evening, abruptly shifting winds to the north with gusts up to 45 mph overnight. This change can rapidly redirect any active fires, increasing chances to rural communities, ranchland, and forest areas.

Highways near Valentine and across the Nebraska National Forest could see reduced visibility from smoke if fires develop. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay any activity that could create sparks.

The warning remains in effect through early Sunday, and additional alerts may follow if conditions persist.
