Greenville, SC – Light freezing rain is impacting higher elevations across western North Carolina this morning, with slippery conditions expected through 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.

Forecasters say ice accumulations ranging from a few hundredths to around one-tenth of an inch are likely in the northern North Carolina mountains, including areas near Boone, Burnsville, and Mount Mitchell. The NWS added that a light glaze may also occur on higher ridges outside the official advisory zone, particularly above 3,500 feet in parts of Macon, Jackson, and Haywood counties.

The agency urges drivers to slow down and use caution, as even light icing can make bridges and mountain roads treacherous. Power outages are also possible due to light ice accumulation on trees and lines.

The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. EST Sunday, November 30, covering much of the higher terrain in western North Carolina. Conditions are expected to improve by late morning as temperatures rise above freezing.
