Hamilton, Montana – A strong fall storm is set to hit the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains this weekend, potentially bringing several inches of snow and hazardous travel conditions along Highway 93 through Lost Trail Pass by early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning for elevations above 5,500 feet. Forecasters say 2 to 6 inches of snow are possible, with higher totals along the ridge tops near Sula and Lost Trail Pass.

The storm will arrive Saturday evening, intensifying overnight as colder air filters in from the north. “Drivers should expect difficult conditions on mountain passes, including icy stretches and poor visibility,” the weather service warned. Snow and slush could freeze overnight, creating dangerous travel early Sunday and again Monday morning.

According to the Montana Department of Transportation, motorists traveling Highway 93 south of Hamilton should be prepared for slick, snow-covered roads, possible chain restrictions, and delays at Lost Trail Pass. Travelers are urged to carry emergency gear, slow down, and monitor real-time road cameras.

Temperatures across the Bitterroot Valley will fall sharply through the weekend, signaling a clear turn toward winter. Hunters, campers, and residents in higher terrain should prepare for subfreezing nights and potential power interruptions due to wet snow accumulation on trees and lines.
