Kansas City, Missouri – A volatile weather day is unfolding across western Missouri as near-record heat pushes temperatures into the mid-80s this afternoon before strong storms arrive after sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, thunderstorms are expected to develop along a cold front between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m., with the greatest risk across the Kansas City metro, St. Joseph, and areas along the I-35 corridor. Some storms could produce hail up to 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.

Before storms arrive, fire weather concerns remain elevated, especially west of I-35, where low humidity and wind gusts over 40 mph could allow fires to spread quickly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose items ahead of both wind and storm threats.

Cities including Overland Park, Olathe, and Independence could see rapidly changing conditions this evening, with brief heavy rain, lightning, and strong wind gusts impacting travel on I-70 and I-435.

Cooler air arrives behind the front Friday, with temperatures dropping sharply and calmer conditions expected. Additional alerts may be issued as storms develop later tonight.
