Michigan – Snow presses steadily across rooftops and roadways this morning, muting traffic noise and shrinking sightlines across western Lower Michigan. Flakes thicken at times, sticking quickly to untreated pavement. Even short drives feel slower as winter asserts control early and refuses to let go.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, snow will impact travel today and tonight, especially near and west of U.S. 131. Most locations see 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Areas north of Grand Rapids toward Holland and the lakeshore could pick up 4 to 7 inches as snow showers intensify.

Across Kent, Allegan, and Van Buren counties, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Saturday. Roads may stay snow-covered through the day, affecting both morning and evening commutes. Drivers on U.S. 131, I-196, and M-6 should expect reduced visibility during heavier bursts.

Snow showers continue into Saturday and Saturday night, with lake-effect bands developing near Lake Michigan. Accumulations remain light at times, but repeated rounds keep travel tricky. By Sunday, snow chances increase again as colder air deepens.

The bigger shift arrives by MLK Day. Bitter cold settles in, with highs struggling in the teens and overnight lows near or below zero. Wind chills plunge between 10 and 20 degrees below zero at times, especially Monday into Tuesday. Blowing snow remains possible, compounding hazards even after snowfall tapers.

Residents should plan ahead now. Allow extra travel time, slow down on snow-packed roads, and limit exposure during extreme cold. Winter’s grip tightens heading into the holiday, and conditions may deteriorate quickly during heavier snow bands.
