Grand Rapids, Mich. – Strong thunderstorms are expected across southwest Lower Michigan this afternoon and evening, with the potential for damaging winds, torrential rain and dangerous lightning. The National Weather Service said storms could peak between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., producing wind gusts up to 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, the greatest risk for severe weather will stretch along lakeshore counties from Muskegon to Van Buren, where waves and high winds could make conditions hazardous. Inland communities, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing and Jackson, could also see flooding on roads during downpours.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel during the strongest storms as downed trees and power lines may create dangerous conditions. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices and prepare for potential power outages.

Storm chances remain through early next week, with scattered thunderstorms possible Sunday through Tuesday. While severe weather is less likely after tonight, heavy rain and lightning remain possible, with gusts near 40 mph in stronger cells.

Additional advisories may be issued if storm intensity increases. Weather officials urge residents to monitor alerts and be prepared for changing conditions.
