Grand Rapids, Michigan – Snow begins piling up fast across Western Michigan as a widespread winter system settles in, turning highways slick and visibility poor during peak travel hours. Gusty winds push flakes sideways, and untreated roads quickly become snow-covered, setting the stage for difficult travel through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, accumulating snow develops Friday and intensifies through the day. The heaviest snowfall rates are expected Friday morning and again Friday afternoon, directly impacting both the morning and evening commutes. Snow totals are expected to range from 2 to 5 inches along the US-131 corridor, with higher amounts closer to Lake Michigan.

Along the lakeshore, snowfall totals of 4 to 7 inches are likely, with isolated areas picking up 8 inches or more. Communities north of Holland face the greatest risk for heavier lake-enhanced bands. Snow may fall steadily at times, reducing visibility and quickly covering road surfaces.

Westerly winds increase to 15 to 25 mph, causing blowing snow and drifting in open areas. Drivers on US-131, I-196, and secondary roads should expect slick conditions, especially during heavier bursts. Plan extra travel time Friday and consider delaying non-essential trips if possible.

Snow continues into early Saturday before gradually tapering. While snowfall rates ease, cold pavement will keep roads icy through the morning hours. Crews will work to clear main routes, but side streets and rural roads may remain snow-covered.

Looking ahead, quieter conditions return later Saturday as the system pulls east. Additional advisories remain possible if lake-effect bands intensify. Traveling Friday or early Saturday? Share what conditions you’re seeing where you are across Western Michigan.
