Michigan wakes under low clouds and damp air as flakes begin mixing in across western counties. Windshields bead with moisture, visibility drops in pockets of fog, and the tone of the day shifts fast toward winter.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, snow accumulations are likely through tonight as a system tracks across the Great Lakes. The highest totals are expected north of a Muskegon-to–Big Rapids line, where 3 to 5 inches are possible. In and around Grand Rapids, rain transitions to snow this afternoon, with lighter accumulations but notable travel impacts.

Across Kent and Ottawa counties, roads start wet and turn slushy as temperatures hover near freezing. US-131, I-196, and M-6 may see changing conditions through the afternoon and evening. Patchy fog early reduces visibility, then snow showers take over. Even modest snow can slow traffic during heavier bursts.

By evening, snow continues with gusty winds adding a raw feel. Lows dip into the mid-20s, allowing melted snow to refreeze. Flash freezing becomes a concern after dark on bridges, ramps, and untreated sidewalks. Plan extra time and reduce speed as conditions deteriorate.

Sunday brings lingering snow showers early, then gradual improvement. Skies stay mostly cloudy, and highs struggle to reach the low 30s. Snow ends, but slick spots remain, especially north of the city where totals are higher.

Early next week trends quieter but cold. Monday turns partly sunny near the mid-30s. Another round of rain or snow is possible by Tuesday, followed by more snow chances midweek as winter holds firm across Lower Michigan.

Slow down today, keep headlights on in snow and fog, and expect conditions to change quickly.
