Grand Rapids, Michigan – Evening storms could sweep across western Michigan tonight, placing several lakeshore and inland counties under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until midnight Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 35 includes Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo, Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa and Van Buren counties. Major cities within the watch area include Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Holland.
Storms moving northeast across the region could strengthen quickly during the late evening hours. Drivers along Interstate 196, U.S. 131 and I-94 may encounter bursts of heavy rain, frequent lightning and wind gusts strong enough to bring down small branches or create brief power interruptions.
Communities along the Lake Michigan shoreline, including Muskegon and Holland, could see storms intensify as lake-enhanced winds push inland. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, charge mobile devices and remain indoors if storms approach.
Emergency managers across western Michigan urge residents in cities such as Wyoming, Grand Haven and South Haven to monitor weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during stronger storms.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains active until 12 a.m. Wednesday, and additional warnings could be issued quickly if stronger cells develop across western Michigan tonight.
