Grand Rapids, Michigan – Another round of potentially severe thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across much of Lower Michigan on Monday, with the greatest threat developing during the afternoon and continuing into the early overnight hours. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are expected to be the primary hazards, while an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids and the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, much of central and western Lower Michigan remains under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms Monday. Forecasters expect storms to develop along a cold front between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m., although confidence in the exact timing and coverage remains lower than average.
Communities including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, Battle Creek, Mount Pleasant, Saginaw, Traverse City and Alpena could all experience strong to severe thunderstorms if storms organize. The greatest concern is for damaging wind gusts capable of bringing down trees and power lines, along with large hail that could damage vehicles, roofs and crops. While the tornado threat is comparatively low, the National Weather Service says a brief tornado remains possible with the strongest storms.
An earlier round of isolated thunderstorms is also possible late Sunday into early Monday, mainly between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., though forecasters note those storms may remain west of the state. How that initial activity evolves could influence the intensity and coverage of Monday’s storms.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture and other loose items before storms develop and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions during the afternoon and evening commute. Drivers should expect reduced visibility in heavy rain and be alert for downed branches or isolated power outages if severe storms move through.
