Michigan weather is turning active across western counties as light snow begins to develop late this morning around Grand Rapids. Pavement remains mostly dry for now, but colder air and increasing clouds signal a quick change by midafternoon.
Temperatures sit near 32 degrees with a northwest breeze, and highs only reach 33. According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, snow becomes more widespread after 3 p.m. Snow totals will generally range from 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts possible near and north of I-96. Roads will become snow covered and slick later today and into the evening.
Drivers along I-96, US-131, and M-6 should plan extra time. Even light accumulation can quickly coat bridges and untreated surfaces. As temperatures drop to 17 tonight, any slush will refreeze, creating classic flash-freeze conditions.
Sunday brings sunshine but colder air, with a high near 29 and lows dipping to 12 Sunday night. Monday rebounds to 37 under sunny skies. Another system arrives Tuesday, bringing rain and snow with an 80% chance of precipitation. Freezing rain is possible in spots, which could create hazardous travel.
By Wednesday, highs climb toward 48 with scattered showers. Temperatures push into the 50s by Thursday and upper 50s Friday, signaling a March warm spell across western Michigan. Longer-range outlooks favor above-normal temperatures into next weekend.
