Michigan – Snow swirls sideways across parking lots and highways this morning as strong winds whip through West Michigan, cutting visibility and coating roads during a crucial holiday travel stretch. The air feels raw and unsettled, with winter conditions worsening fast after daybreak.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Monday evening for much of central, south-central, and southwest Michigan. Additional snow accumulations of two to four inches are expected, combined with wind gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph. Blowing snow may reduce visibility sharply at times, especially in open areas.
Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon, Battle Creek, Ionia, and Hastings are all impacted. Travel along I-96, US-131, and I-196 is expected to be hazardous through the morning and evening commutes. Strong winds may bring down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages, adding to travel disruptions.
Temperatures hover near freezing early, then slip into the 20s later today. Any snow that partially melts will refreeze quickly after dark, creating a high risk for black ice. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking, particularly on bridges and ramps.
Snow showers continue into Tuesday, with additional lighter accumulations possible Tuesday night into Wednesday. Conditions gradually quiet by New Year’s Eve, though cold air remains locked in place. New Year’s Day 2026 looks mostly cloudy and cold, with highs struggling near the upper teens, keeping winter firmly in control.
This system is part of a broader Great Lakes winter storm impacting travel across the region as 2025 comes to a close. Allow extra time, secure outdoor items, and keep emergency kits ready. Heading out today? What are road conditions like in your neighborhood right now?
