GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Frost Advisory is in effect for much of central, south-central, and west-central Michigan from midnight through 9 a.m. Friday, as temperatures are expected to dip as low as 31 degrees. The early-season chill could spell trouble for gardeners and farmers across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, frost formation is likely overnight as clear skies and calm winds allow temperatures to plummet. Sensitive outdoor plants could be damaged or killed if left uncovered, especially in rural and low-lying areas.
Residents in cities such as Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Holland are urged to bring potted plants indoors and cover garden beds with sheets or frost cloths. Even light frost can harm tomatoes, peppers, and flowering annuals that remain outdoors.
The advisory is expected to expire by midmorning Friday as temperatures rebound into the upper 40s and 50s under mostly sunny skies. Another round of chilly nights is possible through the weekend, with forecasters monitoring conditions for potential additional advisories.
Warnings remain in effect through 9 a.m. Friday.
