GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Beachgoers along Lake Michigan from Grand Haven to Manistee are urged to stay out of the water today as strong winds drive dangerous waves and rip currents. Winds topping 25 mph will build waves between 3 and 5 feet, making swimming extremely hazardous, particularly on the south sides of south piers.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, the most treacherous conditions are expected late this morning through the afternoon. Red-flag swim conditions are posted for much of the shoreline, with high-risk zones stretching across Ottawa, Muskegon, Oceana, and Mason counties.
Officials warn that strong currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Anyone visiting the lakeshore is advised to stay on the sand, keep children away from the water’s edge, and avoid walking on wet or slippery pier surfaces.
Hazardous wave and current conditions are expected to ease by this evening, but beach safety alerts could return with future wind events.
