Grand Rapids, Mich. – Lake Michigan beaches remain dangerous through the start of the week, with forecasters warning swimmers and pier walkers to stay out of the water as waves build and currents strengthen.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Beach Hazards Statement stays in effect through Monday evening for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties. Forecasters warn of strong currents, high waves, and the risk of people being swept off piers. The most hazardous conditions will be near the north sides of piers, where rip currents often intensify.

Farther south, the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana extended its Beach Hazards Statement for Berrien County, Michigan, and La Porte County, Indiana, through Tuesday evening. Waves of 4 to 6 feet today and Monday are expected to gradually lower to 2 to 4 feet Tuesday, but strong rip and structural currents will remain a threat.

Officials urge residents and visitors to avoid swimming, remain off piers, and watch for potential beach closures issued by local authorities. Even experienced swimmers are at risk under these conditions.

Hazards are expected to ease gradually by midweek as winds shift and wave action diminishes. Until then, warnings remain in place.
