Grand Rapids, MI – Hazy skies and smoky air will continue to blanket western Michigan through Monday night as a statewide Air Quality Advisory remains in effect due to wildfire smoke drifting from Canada. Residents from Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo are waking up to patchy fog and reduced visibility, while fine particulate pollution hovers in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (USG) range.

According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), PM2.5 levels remain elevated across all counties, with some locations entering the “Red AQI” zone—posing increased health risks to those with heart or lung conditions. Outdoor activities should be limited, especially for children, seniors, and individuals with asthma or respiratory illness.

In Grand Rapids, visibility dropped to 4 miles early Monday with light east winds offering little relief. The haze is expected to lift gradually by Tuesday as winds shift, but air quality may remain moderate to poor through midweek. Calm conditions overnight are trapping smoke near the surface, especially in low-lying areas and river valleys.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny with highs near 88°F.
Wednesday: Warm and hazy, reaching 87°F.
Thursday: Sunshine continues, high near 89°F.
Friday: Heat ramps up with a high of 92°F.
Saturday: Sunny and hot, high of 93°F.

While no thunderstorms are expected until at least Wednesday, the heat trend will continue to climb. Keep windows closed overnight, avoid burning outdoors, and run air conditioning with MERV-13 filters where possible. More air quality alerts are likely if smoke lingers beyond midweek.
